Chronicles of Ninja + Child for Comics Anthologies - #1
I've started writing scripts for comics and realized that I should convert some of the Ninja + Child posts to 8 page anthology shorts. Here's the script for #1 - The Gates of Epiphany:

The title page is a full page spread of a night-time seascape; rolling clouds billow out of the horizon, an ethereal wonderment to befuddle any mortal. We can see a small rowboat (big enough for 2-3 people), carrying only a ninja with a baby strapped to his chest, wrapped up in his black ninja wraps--but the baby might not be visible in this scene as he is facing away from the reader, out toward oncoming waves, into the cloud-work. The boat and the ninja are fairly small in this shot. The ninja is rowing with both hands.
The 3 captions flow diagonally down from top left to bottom right.

“The Gates of Epiphany”
CAPTION
This path is deadly, but we have come so far.
CAPTION
Code Name Alice rides peacefully, sleeping on my chest.
CAPTION
She holds such power.
This is a flashback scene to a previous battle. Same time of night as the opening page. Normal vertical panel layout with the final 3 small panels laid next to each other horizontally. Perhaps the middle of the three is a little taller.
PANEL 1
EXT; night. Sleep Deprivation Ninja is sprinting through a wheat field, Code Name Alice, strapped to his chest, facing him, sleeping. We can see her eyes closed.
CAPTION
I have protected her...
PANEL 2
Same view; Ninja has turned to look behind, arm stretched out, a throwing star flying away from him.
CAPTION
...in battle.
PANEL 3
Top view; we see the ninja and child in the middle of the field, 3 other ninja moving in, surrounding them. One of the attacking ninja is bent backward, arms splayed out to the sides, screaming as the throwing star has thudded into his chest. One of the ninja is unmasked and burly, like a wrestler.
DYING NINJA
gaaAAAH!
SFX (AT IMPACT)
splud!
PANEL 4 (SMALL)
Close up on one of the other ninja attackers, head masked, leaping up, high into the air, in a battle-ready pose, sword drawn.
PANEL 5 (SMALL)
Close up on the remaining ninja attacker, charging forward in a roar. His face isn't covered, so we can see his teeth as he growls in his attack. This one is more muscular. He has no weapons but his large hands.
CHARGING NINJA
RAAAA!
PANEL 6 (SMALL)
Close up on Sleep Deprivation Ninja, calmly standing still.
CAPTION
But she guides me...
PANEL 1
Back in the rolling seascape. The ninja is looking up at the dark clouds.
CAPTION
...here, to challenge the guardians at the Gates of Epiphany.
PANEL 2
The clouds boom from the left while the ninja is shown standing in the boat to the right.
CLOUDS (JAGGED)
Turn back, lest you become lost forever in the Mists of Antithesis!
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
We are not mere mortals. And we will prove it.
PANEL 3
The clouds shift.
CLOUDS (THOUGHT)
Really? How?
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
What is round and invisible?
PANEL 4
The clouds roll with delight. The dialog is now coming in parts from different sections of the clouds.
CLOUDS
Oh, a riddle! Um, it's a forgotten soul!
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
No.
CLOUDS
No wait! Um, a circle...
CLOUDS
...that you...
CLOUDS
Draw!
CLOUDS
...in the air.
CLOUDS
With your fingers!
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA (CONT)
No.
Flashback to battle. The first panel is full width with the next three small panels taking up a third width, as we did before.
PANEL 1
The attacking, mask-less ninja from the earlier battle is rushing forward from the left of the panel as his neck buckles from a blow. Sleep Deprivation Ninja is landing a forceful jab into his jugular. Fierce action lines ensue.
Code Name Alice is stirring in her sleep. We see a dream of a butterfly extending out of her subconscious.
CODE NAME ALICE (THOUGHT)
(Pictures of a butterfly)
SFX (ON ALICE)
giggle
CAPTION
I protect her with weapons.
PANEL 2 (SMALL)
Top down view; Sleep Deprivation Ninja, looking up, eyes wide.
PANEL 3 (SMALL)
Ninja's view, looking up at the attacking masked ninja descending, fast moving lines streaking out from him.
PANEL 4 (SMALL)
Close up on Code Name Alice, giggling in her sleep.
SFX (ON ALICE)
giggle
PANEL (LARGE)
Bystander view of Sleep Deprivation Ninja pulling his head back as a burst of sunlight explodes from Code Name Alice's mind. The descending ninja is now splayed chaotically, out of control. One of his legs is bent upward in the reverse of where it should be and we see the SNAP sound there. Code Name Alice still has her eyes closed but her mouth is open, as she emits a laugh.

SNAP
CODE NAME ALICE
Hah!
CAPTION
But she has powers beyond mortal weaponry.
PANEL 1
The rolling clouds are disturbed.
CLOUDS
OK, we give up. What is round and invisible?
PANEL 2
Looking back toward the ninja, standing on his boat. His right hand is outstretched, palm upward as if holding an invisible cabbage.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
This cabbage.
CLOUDS
Oh.
CLOUDS
Oh, no.
PANEL 3 (SMALL)
This panel lays on top of the next panel which is much lager than the normal size. It shows the ninja, pulling his arm back to throw the psychic projection of a cabbage.
PANEL 4 (LARGE)
A gust of wind, as if carried by the force of a flying cabbage is bursting through the clouds, tearing a hole through the center, stretching from the ninja out into space. Through the hole, the sky is lighter.
PANEL 1
The thick, cumulous clouds peel backward away from the stream, beginning to break down into misting rain. The sky lightens up and the panel becomes brighter, nearing dawn. Code Name Alice speaks with psychic projections, so the balloon will have some kind of non-tail psychic style.
CODE NAME ALICE
Where are we going, daddy?
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
To the Gates of Epiphany.
CAPTION
She speaks to me in my mind.
PANEL 2
Dawn, a little brighter; Now we see the Gates of Epiphany in the distance, on the shores of an island. The gates are magnificent--what one would expect of biblical Pearly Gates.
CODE NAME ALICE
Is it beautiful, daddy?
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
Stay asleep.
CAPTION
Beauty is misleading.
PANEL 3
A little brighter; Closer to the Gates.
CODE NAME ALICE
Why are we going there?
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
To find the answers.
PANEL 4
A little lighter; Closer.
CODE NAME ALICE
What answers?
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
The purpose of existence.
PANEL 1
Early morning, the panel is brighter. Ninja and Child are walking toward the Gates, away from the boat, which is pulled up onto shore.
CODE NAME ALICE
It will be pretty.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
Truth is not always beauty, love. I cannot promise what we will find.
CAPTION
Doubtless, more darkness.
PANEL 2 (SMALL 1/3)
Close up on the Ninja's head. His eyes are determined.
PANEL 3 (SMALL 1/3)
Same angle; The ninja's head is bent down a little. We can see his shoulders stretched (he is opening the gates)
PANEL 4 (SMALL 1/3)
Same angle; we are through the gates and can see them behind the ninja's head. His eyes are squinting.
PANEL 5 (SMALL SET OF 3)
Sleep Deprivation Ninja unwraps his head, leaving the black cloth draping over his shoulders. First, he peels away his forehead, then his mouth, finally we see his whole face, looking forward.
PANEL 6 (SMALL 1/3)
Same angle; now as if a pleasant epiphany has struck him. His eyes have loosened. He has a hint of smile.
PANEL 7 (SMALL 1/3)
Same angle; He is looking down at Alice.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
You can wake up now, little one.
PANEL 8 (SMALL 1/3)
Same angle; he is looking back up toward the reader.
SLEEP DEPRIVATION NINJA
You already knew what was here, didn't you?
Full page spread.
The gates are open to the left, the ninja and child standing just inside the open field, green, lush, full of color, contrasting the grayness of the previous ocean. Flowers bloom. A torrent of colorful butterflies stream out of Alice's mind, into the field. The sun bursting from the horizon on the other side.
SFX (FROM ALICE)
